Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and the picture.
This is a condition called periungual infection or paronychia.
This happens due to the infection. Because there is no space for the edema to spread and as the position of the thumb / hand is usually below the heart-level, even the minimal edema causes throbbing pain.
The picture / your history is showing all the signs and symptoms of redness, pain and swelling.
Knowing that you are breast feeding the baby, the following medicines can be taken safely.
You can take 400 mg of Ibuprofen three times a day after food.
Take an antibiotic like Amoxycyclin + Dicloxacin - thrice daily.
Apply Liquid Povidone (Betadine)Iodine locally
Try to keep the hand above the heart level when you are resting so that the edema and pain are drastically reduced.
I hope this answer helps you to get a good relief now and a cure too.
If the swelling increases or if the abscess forms and does not open, you may please consult a local Doctor / Surgeon who can remove the dead-skin covering to get the abscess out and to have a fastest and complete recovery. You also get a Valid Prescription.
