Suggest Remedy For Post Surgical Nosebleed

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Oct 2015
Question: On August 4th, I had septoplasty and turbinectomy.
It seemed to go fine. Travelled after 10 days. Was using saline solution daily.
Around the last few days in August, I coughed out a blood clot. Surgeon said it was residual from the surgery.
A couple of days later on September 4th, had a posterior nose bleed lasting 5h. The bleeding stopped when they put balloon nasal packing in.
I am supposed to fly to XXXXXXX in 2 days but deathly afraid to have an episode due to pressure changes in plane and dry conditions. I dont feel the airline is equipped to deal with such a nose bleed.
Advice?

Brief Answer:
you can fly.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having post surgery (septoplasty +turbinectomy) nasal bleeding.

As such, post surgical nasal bleeding is common for 2-4 weeks depending on the type of surgery.

In my opinion, you can do air travel ( Its almost 2 months now, where total healing might have occured). I suggest you to take prohylactic antiallergic medications, in case of allergic rhintis to counter pressure changes of high altitude (air travel).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Is otrivin good enough? I will also be using saline nasal spray and gelositin nasal oil spray. Will otrivin react negatively with any of these?

Brief Answer:
stop otrivin

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Answers for your queries.

1. In view of side effects, Otrivin (xylometazoline), not advisable for more than 15 days post operatively ( dryness, glucoma, hypertension).

2. Saline nasal spray used to remove dry crusts, where as, gelositin is used for moistening the nose in dry, humid climate.

3. I would suggest you to with hold otrivin for a while and continue saline and gelositin spray to remove dry crusts.

4. With that, Trim your finger nails and do not pluck dry crusts, take plenty of water (be hydrated in dry climate).

All the best, Take care.
