Suggest Remedy For Rashes On Torso In A Child After Taking IV Antibiotics

Posted on Fri, 18 Dec 2015
Question: when is the final review of blood, urine, mucus, and spinal fluid samples? (ex. 48hrs, or 72 hrs, or other) ?the er gave my son XXXXXXX (14 mos) about 10cc of antibiotic by iv, after a near certain diagnosis of ear infection by the er dr. none of the other dr's that i spoke to during benjamins 48 hrs of er to pediatric care at hospital agreed with ear infection being an option. concern now is, the diagnosis after mon-fri "virus" is roseola. This is because now there is no more fever (since 36 hrs ago) and a rash has appeared from torso to neck and along front hairline.

Could the antibiotic be the reason for this rash? it was given aprx 72 hours ago.

Brief Answer:
There is indeed a possibility. The treating physician needs to check.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I would first ask if you have given the antibiotic on prescription from your treating physician. Children need to be given antibiotics only if deemed required by the treating doctor and the dose should be specifically calculated based on the body weight. Moreover, skin testing needs to be done for many antibiotics and unless that has been done, indeed there are possibilities of rashes occurring as allergic reaction or side effect of antibiotics. It is hard to comment without proper clinical details or the investigations to corroborate. You can upload an image but it will still be difficult for me to interpret without the relevant details.

Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics and rashes can occur in viral infections like roseola.

I hope you understand.
