Posted on Mon, 11 Jan 2016
Question: I have been on dexalant for about 3 months and do not really notice a big difference. I have really bad acid reflux. I had a scope done a few weeks ago and was told my stomach was very inflamed. My burning is almost all the time and it burns down lower now too. I use to take protonix and tonight thought I would try this instead
of the dexalant> I hope this was okay? My doc said to stay on dexalant for 6 months and go back. It makes me feel awful also. DO you have any advice for me what to do? I am constantly taking tums.

Brief Answer:
The possibility of H. Pylori infection should be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.

Dexilant (Dexlansoprazole) a proton pump inhibitor is found to be effective to treat heartburn associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and to heal erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid). It is usually prescribed for 6-8 weeks.

Since you have been using it for more than 3 months and still did not get relief and the the recent endoscopy revealed gastritis (inflamed stomach lining) so in my opinion the possibility of infection caused by Helicobacter pylori should be ruled out.

You are advised to have urea breath test or stool antigen test to rule out the H.pylori infection

Gastritis caused by H.pylori infection needs to be treated with a course of two antibiotics for two weeks in addition to proton pump inhibitor like Dexilant for 4-6 weeks.

Meanwhile you may take a Prokinetic drug like Domperidone along with Dexilant to prevent the regurgitation of the stomach contents causing tums.
Hope the suggestions given above could help you in getting rid of tums.
Best regards.

Brief Answer:
Kindly repeat the lab tests for H. pylori infection

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ma'am, Hi
Thanks for your reply and the compliment.
The lab tests like Urea breath test or Stool antigen test need to be repeated as there could be a possibility of H. pylori infection.
Besides you are advised to have certain life style changes like:
1. Avoid alcohol and smoking (if you take/smoke)
2. Avoid fatty, spicy meals, fast & junk foods, coffee, etc.
3. Eat home cooked food, take plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink water
4. Do regular exercise

Hope this helps.
Best regards.
