Suggest Remedy For Severe Pain In Leg
Question: Hello My name is Doris. I have had the most excruciating pain in my left leg for a couple weeks. From reading it appears to be the IT band, but I am 75 years old, no broken bones (x-rays proved) but I have been rendered immobile. I've tried a few exercises I can do while laying down but am too pain filled to do much. No pain med has helped. Hydrocodone or Tramadol. I have therapy finally scheduled next Wednesday, but I need to have some kind of relief now. Thanks.

Hi Thanks for your question. To answer it I need more information.
Where exactly is the pain?
Are you tender in that area when you press?
When does the pain bother you? what does it feel like - is it dull or sharp?
What makes it worse?
What makes it better?
Is there any numbness or weakness associated with it?
Are you limping?
Best wishes

I thought my question was self explanatory as far as the pain is concerned. It starts in the lower hip area, down around the knee, and continues on to the arch or bottom of my (flat) feet. It started hurting on Tuesday the 3rd while walking from a funeral home visitation to my car. By the next couple days the only way I could walk was with the help of a walker. My PC x-rayed and found no broken bones in the thigh, knee and lower leg, prescribed hydrocodone and sent me on my way. I am not a runner but from all indication it is the muscle that goes the length from my buttocks to the foot. After looking on Google, it appears to me to be the IT band. It hurts terribly under the knee when I set down and when I bend it again to get up. (I usually have my feet elevated while sitting). The more I hobble around in my 900 sqft apt I am in tears from the pain. I am more than limping, Staying off my feet helps. I sleep very well at night, except for the few times of my legs hurting so bad (both legs) in the calves, feet, thighs which wakes me up. Please give me something to go on. Pain meds have done no good. he gave me 5/325 (?) hydrocodone. I've gone as far as taking 1 and 1/2 and then once before bed time I took two, but even though I rest, I still wake up in pain. The pain is sharp most times. During the night it is more of an ache/discomfort, however more than restless leg. Thanks, xxxxxx
Brief Answer:
Thanks for the further information.
Detailed Answer:
the pain that you describe is not consistent with pain from an ITB syndrome. it seems more consistent with a nerve type pain. neuralgia or sciatica. this most commonly occurs because of a pinched nerve in your lower back. the diagnosis can be made often by physical assessment and an MRI scan of the lower back.
In my opinion, I think you should get back to your primary care physician or visit an orthopedician who after physical examination can order this MRI scan. Treatment should be based on MRI scan result.
