Suggest Remedy For Stomach Irritation When On Levofloraxacin
capsules which were taken over a period of 10 days. My stomach is very irritated but the irritation
is controlled to a degree by a Maalox substitute made by CVS. I see that this stomach irritation is
a common side effect of levofloraxcin. Will this subside? I took the last capsule on Monday; today
is Wednesday. Thank you.
Gastritis will resolve

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns
You have recently been taking Levofloxacin for pneumonia and having side effects from the antibiotic. As you stated already the antibiotic can cause stomach upset. This is very common and is related to the antibiotic killing not only the bad bacteria in you lungs but also the good bacteria in you GI tract. To help reduce the stomach discomfort I recommend for my patients using a probiotic. You can purchase probiotics in the pharmacy but you can also eat yogurt. The bacterial cultures in probiotics and yogurt help maintain the correct balance of bacteria in your GI tract. The levofloxacin has caused an imbalance and this is an easy and effective way to regain that balance. I recommend also taking the probiotic for 1-2 weeks after finishing the antibiotic.
In summary
1. GI distress from antibiotic very common
2. Use a probiotic to regain balance
3. Use probiotic for 1-2 weeks after antibiotics

treatment for 10 days and feel that I am well on the road to recovery. I still have some discomfort in
the area of my right lung. I am 73 years old. My main concern is whether I am contagious. I wouldn't
want someone else to catch this.
Not contagious

Thanks for returning to HCM.
I am glad to hear that you are getting better especially from your pneumonia. It can take sometime to recover from pneumonia and the best thing to do is rest. As far as being contagious to other you are no longer contagious. As your body is recovering the bacteria are no longer viable and can't transmit to others. The time for being contagious is just prior to becoming ill and then about 1 week after treatment at the latest. So you can socialize with others without feeling responsible for possible infecting others.
