Suggest Remedy For Stress And Anxiety While Exercising

Question: Heart during exercise. Hello Dr, I had a friend pass away suddenly during exercise (basketball) and now I find myself constantly worrying when working out. It has turned working out into a stressful anxiety filled situation. I guess my question is, is there ever a time when working out is dangerous or can be harmful? I obviously understand the heat and stuff but my question is focused around the heart. About me, I'm 31 have always been active in sports, basketball, surfing, basebal etc since I was 4 or 5 years old. I exercise 5 days a week still and never have had any sort of shortness of breath or chest pains. My BP is 123/76, Cholesterol 177 (52 Good), TRIG 53 and PLT count 233,000. Additionally, I've recently had an ekg which was normal and my DR says my heart sounds amazing. My resting pulse is 48 when waking up around 50' 60's watching tv or working at desk. My heart rate returns to normal within a few minutes of an intense workout. However, I find myself paranoid about working out now. I know there is always a chance, but my question is do my sound minimal? Working out keeps me sane and I hate it's become stressful. I'm also attaching a copy of my short interval fitbit run to give you an idea what my heart does during a short work-out. Thanks in advance! I guess my fear is going into cardiac arrest during a basketball game or long run?

I understand your concern, and would like to explain that you are at an extremely low risk of experiencing such a life threatening complication.

Generally speaking, there are two ways of having a cardiac arrest during physical activity:
1. a heart attack ,which may be caused by important coronary lesions (acquired or congenital)
2. cardiac arrhythmia, which is more probable in predisposed individuals.

Reviewing your above medical history, it results that you haven't any obvious coronary artery risk factors .
From the other hand, you are a physically active individual, with an excellent chronotropic response, without any evidences of cardiac arrhythmia.

I am glad to conclude that performing physical exercise on a regularly controlled fashion, seems to be safe for you.
Just try to leave those unpleasant thoughts outside your mind.
