I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Swollen ankles can be related to many different conditions which could also be accompanied by difficulty sleeping. The most common ones if the swelling is present on both sides are heart problems, liver and kidney failure, thyroid low function, arthritis. Also if you are under any medication it could be a side effect of the drug.

Usually those conditions are accompanied by other symptoms as well so I don't want you to overworry. However an evaluation by your primary physician is recommended with some routine blood tests like blood count, sedimentation rate, CRP, liver, kidney, thyroid function tests, electrolytes.
