Brief Answer:
Hematoma likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The fever that your son is having is not likely to be due to the injury and swelling.
The swelling and the pain could be due to blunt trauma to the bone or soft tissue around it leading to break in capillary blood vessels which in turn give rise to haematoma (internal bleeding and clot). Rest assured it will subside in a week. But if he has persistent pain, then please rule out the fracture with CT scan.
The home remedies your son can follow are:
1. I'd suggest you apply ice packs to the area for the next 24 hours (this will help limit the bleeding in the injured areas), and then switch to warm packs, which will help the body clear the bruising away. (Remember to place a dry towel between your skin and an ice pack.)
2. Continue giving him calpol for fever and pain. Do not massage the area as it can lead to an infection.
3. Wrap elastic bandage like crepe bandage at the site of swelling. But don't wrap it too tight
4. Elevate the leg with the help of pillow, it help in reducing swelling and bruise.
If you have an increase in swelling (not bruise), Tenderness at the site and pain even in slight weight bearing than only you needs to do X-ray. Else, need not to worry.
I hope this answers your query.

Hello Doctor,

Little confused between X-Ray and CT-Scan, what will each of these tell or when I should do X-Ray and CT-Scan?

Brief Answer:
CT scan is a better and costlier test than X-ray.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If there is any pain on weight bearing on the leg or the swelling and pain are increasing then CT scan or X-ray are needed to detect any bony injury. CT scan is more sensitive test than an X-ray.
Hope my answer is helpful.
