Question: Earlier in the day I had a roast beef sandwich, I got a piece stuck and tried to drink some water to aid it going down but the water sat on top and I threw up a good chunk. however, it has been about ten hours and I still feel as if it is stuck or if my esophagus is swollen. food and water will not go down just sits on top and comes back up. I can breathe fine, just cannot necessarily swallow

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to throat irritation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query and understand the concern.

This "something stuck" feeling of food piece could be either due to some throat irritation or esophagitis. I doubt if the food is actually stuck into esophagus (food pipe) rather it must have gone inside stomach giving behind (only the) feeling of something stuck in throat.

Generally, this type of feeling could be temporary and may get subsided by itself within 24 hours without any specific treatment. So, you may wait for at least 24 hours till the feeling subsides.

Sometimes the nervous stimulation may last up to 24 to 48 hours. So there isn't anything to be worried here. I would suggest that you wait a day or two before reporting to your doctor.

And as your breathing is fine then there is no chance of it getting into lungs.

If this feeling does not subside (but chances are less) even after 24 hours or swallowing difficulty persists, then i would advise you to see an ENT specialist who will examine you thoroughly with pharyngoscopy to detect the underlying cause, mainly to check if there is any infection or swelling inside.

Meanwhile, you can take symptomatic treatment like anti-emetics (domstal or ondasetron if there is nausea) or antihistamines (levocetrizine 10) twice daily which are available over the counter.
