Suggest Remedy For Swelling On Throat And Swollen Lymph Nodes

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Apr 2015
Question: Hi, my 16 y/o daughter has a swollen lymph node on one side of her neck. She says her throat is "kinda sore" on side of swelling. She describes
"Flashes of hot feeling" & feeling achy & tired.
She's normally very active, soccer player, great student etc. otherwise
healthy.
Should I bring her to walk in clinic for evaluation/medication? Advil made her feel better(she had exams today)!
Would appreciate ur thoughts! Thx

Brief Answer:
probably an infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

sore throat and swollen lymph nodes are common symptoms of pharyngitis. Sometimes fever may be present. You haven't mentioned if the node was tender or painful which is usually the case.
If she also has cough or runny nose then a viral etiology would be more likely. Otherwise the streptococcal etiology has to be considered.

I hope I've helped!

Hi & thanks
Follow up question
She does not have cough or runny nose.
Would antibiotics help her?
She is currently home, resting & Advil did help. Just wondering if I should take her in for possible prescription, or stay home & rest??
Would appreciate ur opinion. Thx

Brief Answer:
Clinical examination cannot be substituted

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the input.

This conversation cannot substitute clinical examination.
If she does have a tender node (you haven't confirmed tenderness) then a streptococcal infection is possible. Your doctor could confirm that with a strep-test which would give an answer within 5 minutes.
In streptococcal disease antibiotic treatment is recommended to eradicate the pathogen and avoid suppurative or other complications. Drinking enough fluids and checking the fever can be helpful.
So I would advise you to visit your doctor for a clinical examination and a strep-test.

Kind Regards!
