Question: I have thoracic Lung pains that stop when I breath deeply . They start in again when I resume normal activities. It started one week ago after an episode of acid reflux that responded well to an alkaseltzer.Lung pains on and off have persisted for the past week. My heart beat is steady and normal @72 beats per minute, and slower at rest. I am 79 years old and just had a complete examination this past Dec.2014. I suspect this may be a LRTI . Do you know of a Breath Tester that could Diagnose lung infections ?

Brief Answer:
I would recommend chest x ray, sputum culture together with other exam...

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concern.

Your symptoms may be related to pulmonary complication due to GERD (acid reflux). There are some examinations which are of help in diagnosing lung infection.

If you were my patient I would like to recommend:
- Blood work together with serology for most common infective agent that cause lung infection.
- Sputum culture
- Chest X ray
- Blood arterial gasses which measure the levels of oxygen and other gasses on the arterial blood
- Oxymetry
All this examinations are of help in diagnosing lung infection (the first three) and to evaluate the severity of this infection (the last two).

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!

Brief Answer:
This new method aren't used in every day clinical practice...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

What you have read are only some new tests which are developing very rapidly. They are similar to alcohol breath test which is used by police (to detect alcohol presence on breath). This new breath tester identify the presence of most common infective agents that cause pneumonia.

However these methods aren't in use in every day practice and the most common used (which is the most accurate one) is sputum culture.

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!
