Suggest Tests To Detect HIV
Question: If you think you may have been exposed to HIV what type of test is the best. Does the p24 Antigen test , test for HIV-1 and HIV-2? How long after exposed should you wait to get tested.
Brief Answer:
P24 test can be done after one week
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
If you think you are worried about the exposure you can get the p24 antigen test within 10 days after exposure. If they are positive appropriate treatment will be started soon by your doctor. If they are negative you should get ELISA.
To be more sure you can get ELISA for HIV 1 and 2 antibiodes on Day 30 and Day 90 and Day 180 as well. THe body produces antibodies against HIV particles and ELISA detects them at those times. 99% conversion done by Day 180 so better to get all three tests done. If the ELISA is confirmed to be positive get a Western Blot.
Hope this answers you.
