Suggest Tests To Diagnose E.coli Infection In Children
Chances of your son falling ill is not quite high
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I am sorry to hear about the fact that your child has put his soiled hands in his mouth. But I can assure you that you need not panic. All I would say is that wait and see whether anything happens. Unless your child grows ill and develops a fever or reduced temperature and grows lethargic, you need not get overactive. Although he can get E coli and get septic, the chances are very less. Only in the above mentioned cases, you need to rush to a doctor and get the child tested. The tests required in that scenario are: complete blood count, c-reactive protein (CRP) and stool microscopy.
I understand your concerns. Hope for the best possible outcome for your son.

Is it worse that the sheet was in the playpen for a day? I wiped it up pretty good
If symptoms occur, they should start within a couple of days
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking back.
I do not expect the symptoms to appear and I do not suppose that anything bad will happen. I have already tried to assure on that. In case the symptoms appear, they are unlikely to take more than a couple of days to appear. Vomiting or loose motion could be the initial symptoms if anything goes wrong.
The sheet being in the playpen simply made it available for the child to touch. But a child is often seen to be playing with its own poo so I would not consider it unusual. I do not think that you need to be anxious about this.
