Question: Regarding bipolar disease - recently, I was extremely attracted to someone and was on an emotional high for quite awhile. My husband died 7 years ago and this attraction to this person made me very happy. When things didn't proceed with this person, I became very depressed, but I limited conversation via email to every three months because I kept getting hurt. Is this bipolar disease or is bipolar disease chemical?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Diagnosing Bipolar Disorder is a complex process that requires several criteria to be present .
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that is caused from a pathological change in brain that might be an imbalance of neurotransmitters( brain chemicals ) ,or structural changes in brain.
In bipolar disorder ,symptoms of mania or depression cause significant difficulty in everyday functioning (life, work, relationships ).
Usually in this disorder symptoms of mania or depression are not explained or triggered by specific events.
So it might be completely normal to experience moments with depressive mood when something bad happens to you .Feeling very happy and exited when you meet someone special and feeling bad, disappointed ,having a bad time when people hurt you is completely normal.
Your symptoms might be explained considering what you have gone through. This doesn't mean that you have a mood disorder.
If your depressive mood disrupts your normal life and you can't do your everyday tasks ,you may consider consulting a specialist (psychiatrist ) that would do a detailed evaluation of your feelings, thoughts, symptoms ,tests before concluding that you have bipolar disorder.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.
