Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: My wife has been having a problem recently it involves speaking or even being aware of her surroundings, it is extremely short in duration 30 to 60 seconds, then she is fine, but doesn't remember the episode. She just had her annual check up and came through fine. This happened twice today.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
transient global amnesia-- evaluation required

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
This can be an episode of transient global amnesia. However you need to taker her to a neurologist for proper evaluation since there are conditions like stroke or seizure that may mimic transient global amnesia. Transient global amnesia is essentially a diagnosis of exclusion
A proper neurological exam needs to be done to exclude any other serious condition. CT/MRI and Electroencephalography also needs to be done. EEG is done to exclude temporal lobe amnestic epilepsy.
If all the tests are negative, then there is nothing to worry about and the condition usually resolves on its own. There is no treatment required for transient global amnesia. Thank you
