Question: My 3 year old grandson has hives. He was on an antibiotic for double ear infection. He saw two drs and they don't know what is causing it. Said possibly the antibiotic. He was fine all day other than the hives. Now he feels warm, has a chill and his knees are very warm and red. He can't stand on his legs because they hurt.

Brief Answer:
Add bbay tylenol every 6hours to his treatment!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these hives that your grandson has been battling with all day. It is rather unfortunate that he has to battle with both illness and hives at the same time.

From the information you have provided, the most likely cause of these hives is probably a drug allergy. I understand the amoxicillin has been stopped and this is a common side effects of penicillin, the class to which amoxicillin belongs.

Treatment of allergic reaction consist in stopping the drug and replacing it with a different medication, prescribing antihistamines and managing the symptoms as they arise. What remains to be done right now is to manage the fever, pains and swellings that your grandson has. I will recommend that you use baby Tylenol for this. administer as recommended by your pharmacist every 6hours.

This will help put the symptoms under control while the body get rids of any remaining traces of this drug in the system. Should the state of the child worsen, please seek another consultation as a closer evaluation and management of the different symptoms may be necessary.

In all, it is probably and allergic reaction to amoxicillin. Note this and report to all health personnel in future. add Tylenol to his treatment and only seek further medical attention should the state of the child deteriorates.

I hope this addresses your query fully. I hope you find it helpful and guiding enough to act on. I wish your grandson well. Thank you so much for using our services and please feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
