Question: My dad had a heart attack and a 99% blockage. He had a stent put in on Friday. Today the doctor said that his heart muscle only working 50%? What does this mean and can medication help this? What is the normal range

I am so sorry to hear about this heart attack that your dad suffered. The meaning of the fact the phrase that his heart is working only at 50% means that the heart is unable to function to levels. For instance, the heart can only pump out 50% of the total blood that comes in. This is not unexpected after a recent heart attack. He would improve over time but he would never get back to his pre- heart attack days. Medications and time would help him improve but never full recover.We always strive to have at least 60% of functioning though 50% is not ideal, it is acceptable soon after a heart attack.
