Suggest Treatment For ADHD

Question: I have a 15 year old daughter. Very head strong, has ADHD and Graves. We are highly concerned because we have taken her phone from her (this is the third time) each time a month longer of keeping it from her. She lies and does not understand how severe it is. We also know she has some of the same symptoms as asbergers, but when I went to her pediatrician they recommended we see a counselor. She is a happy child but we need some strong direction. Just seeing a counselor does not seem to help me go in the right direction. Thanks.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Children with ADHD can be aggressive and difficult to manage. A counsellor can help her to understand the situation and the problems including the possible ways out. However, I would advocate taking her to a child psychologist. He would be able to administer cognitive behavioral therapy or behavior modification therapy which would help in restructuring her attitudes. He could also explain how her caregivers (you and others in the family) should alter behavior in order to deal with her.

Ok, sounds much better. We just want what is best for her to help her manage her ADHD and know the signs of when she is beginning to get mad or aggravated because she sometimes has a hard time with understanding things. I just know it only took one time for me to be punished and I did not ever want to make the same mistake again. She on the other hand does not realize that she keeps doing the same thing, therefore are getting the same results over and over. The light bulb just has not come on yet. This is my wish to get some help that can help her understand better than I can. She is in a good small private school (The New Summit, XXXXXXX MS) and they specialize in helping kids that struggle and have a lot of problems at home. Thanks a bunch for your help.

Thanks for writing back. In addition to what I had already said, let me insist you to keep her in periodic follow up with a psychiatrist. He would be able to evaluate the child and ascertain whether medicines like methamphetamine would be helpful. Usually such medicines play a major role in reducing the level of aggression.
