Detailed Answer:
Hello! I have been through your question.
Related your concern you should know that Cytomegalovirus is a common virus that can infect almost anyone.
Most people don't know they have CMV because it rarely causes symptoms.
You shouldn't worry if you are healthy because CMV is cause for concern only if you have a weakened immune system.
Once you are infected with CMV, your body retains the virus for life and CMV is not always active but usually remains dormant if you are healthy.
CMV may cycle through periods during which it lies dormant and then reactivates but if you are healthy, it mainly stays dormant.
You can pass the virus to others only during reactivation and CMV spreads from person to person through body fluids, such as blood, saliva, urine, semen (sexual intercourse) and breast milk.
Furthermore if your wife is infected with CMV you should know that CMV spread through breast milk but usually doesn't make the baby sick.
This could happens if she develop an active infection during pregnancy, and she can pass the virus to your baby.
Pregnant women who become infected are at low risk of transmitting the virus to their babies.
You should know as well that if it is the first time she have had the infection (primary CMV), risk of transmitting the virus to the baby is higher than it is with reactivated infection. Transmission usually occurs during the first half of pregnancy(usually in first trimester).
I am sad to say this but there is no cure for CMV, but drugs(antivirals) can help treat newborns and people with weak immune systems.
I suggest you to follow some advices to prevent the CMV transmission.
So, careful hygiene is the best prevention against CMV, wash your hands often, avoid contact with your tears and saliva when you kiss a child, avoid sharing food or drinking out of the same glass as others, clean toys and countertops.
Furthermore just in case that you have a compromised immune system, you may benefit from taking antiviral medication to prevent CMV disease.
I hope my answer helps you.Feel free to ask me further.
Regards.
