Question: My wife has a form of Dysplasia (SP) where in her bones produce immature red blood cells. She is currently
being treated with chemo therapy but the results are increased numbers of transfusions and an accumulation
of Fe. which also requires treatment. Is there any potential new treatment other than a marrow transplant?
She is 72 years old.

Brief Answer:
Iron chelation therapy will help to remove excess iron from body.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

Your history suggests that your wife is suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
MDS is managed with supportive treatment, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and stem cell transplant.
Blood transfusion is one of supportive therapy and it will be required to maintain hemoglobin.
Iron overload is a complication of repeated blood transfusion but excess iron can be removed from body by chelation therapy.
Stem cell transplant is definitive treatment for MDS but a HLA matched donor is required for stem cell transplant.
I suggest you to consult your hematologist for management of iron overload.

Thanks and take care
