Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX
Thanks for writing.
GERD in
pregnancy can be very troublesome. Besides the fact that pregnant women have to eat more adds to this.
Regarding medications she is on the right drugs. She can safely continue
ranitidine and antacids.
I also recommend that she doesn't lie down immediately after eating food as the reflux is worsened on lying down flat. She can prop herself up with few pillows when she rests.
Regarding diet in pregnancy it extremely important to eat a balanced diet to improve the health, weight of baby.
Protein requirements increase in pregnancy.
So does
vitamins and minerals.
I recommend following diet plan.
1. She should have 3 meals and 3 snacks so that . Eating less but often.
2. Rice or wheat should be main source of carbohydrates. Roti or bread is fine.
3. If nonvegetarian then eating one portion of grilled chicken or fish per day per meal gives good protein. Please avoid spicy food.
4.Nuts like almonds can be consumed as snacks. They are good in protein.
5. Also try eating small portion of fruits if hungry between meals
6.Legumes like dal, rajma, are important in diet but may be gaseous. I recommend that soaking before cooking and that she consume it on alternate days and also in smaller portions .
7. Two fruits a day are recommended. Avoid XXXXXXX pear if she feels bloated as the peels of these fruits are hard to digest.
Try watermelon, orange.banannas.
8. In vegetables avoid broccoli, cabbage, large quantities of onion,Potatoes, sweet potatoes. Okra, parwal are fine.
9.Milk may also be gaseous. Try yogurt to decrease the bloated sensation.
Carbonated fizzy drinks worsen the GERD/ reflux and have to be avoided.
With above mentioned diet you wife should gain atleast 1 kg per month. total of 10 kg in pregnancy is healthy.
If still she is having the GERD after above measures then we can consider tablet pantaprazole for the same.
Thanks.
