Suggest Treatment For A Blocked And Dry Nose

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Jul 2016
Question: I have been using otrivine off and on for several months. my nose is blocked most of the day until i use otrivine. I have tried various prescription cortisone- steroid based sprays and nose drops to no avail.
I do suffer with hay fever and I've also been using antihistamine medication. This appears to dry the nose and it is even worse.
I have recently seen a ENT CONSULTANT in regard to the above. He performed an endoscopy he could penetrate the one nostril but not the other. The reason he had difficulty is because the inside of my nose has scabs caused by my blowing and slight nose bleeds occur ; which scab over. The slight bleeding happens most times I blow. The consultant prescribed Naseptin Nasal Cream together with Nielmed Sinus Rinse . This was a week ago and as yet the only improvement is the inside of my nose. But the blockage is still there as before.
Hopefully from the above you will have a good brief knowledge of my problem.

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation should help. You can opt for surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. There are two components in your problem - deviated nasal septum (which is the cause of the problem in introducing the endoscope) and viral infection which is usually associated with an allergic reaction as well.

The treatment of the former is surgical correction or rhinoplasty. The management of the latter would be to take some antiallergic (antihistamine) as well as steam inhalation. While it would reduce the dryness, it will also help by diluting the mucus. The simplest way to make steam is to heat the water till it boils. It can be done anyhow. Using a kettle can limit the exit of the steam and would therefore prolong the duration of release. Using electirc vaporizer is another option but that is not mandatory. You can boil water by any means and that should suffice. Thereafter you have to inhale the steam. That it! Do it multiple times a day.

Nielmed Sinus Rinse would also help. You need not frequently use the cortisone-steroid based sprays. They tend to reduce the problem faster but also make the problem return faster. Use saline nasal drops to clear the blockages.
