
Suggest Treatment For A Blue Bruise On The Lower Leg After Injury

Question: My husband crashed his lower leg into a steel rake holding weights at the gym 6 days ago, very painful but could move foot and leg.Calf swelled up , put on ice for several days, now smallish black and blue on right outer calf ,and around lower foot half way around including heel and continued to back 1/2 foot, elevating , icing, better some but still painful, on plavix for stents in heart. 74 yr. old ,goes to gym daily , not now

This is obviously posttraumatic hematoma which is caused by ligament or capsule tear and haematoma is always more pronounced in people who take Plavix or anticoagulants.
I dont think there is something he can do more beside, icing, elevation and rest + nonsteroidal pain killers, but if you can, it would be good to do X-rays to see if there is any avulsion fracture and if in this case, cast immobilization may be required.
