Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Bloating And Flatulence
Medications recommend and some examinations
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
Bloating and gas is the stomach are can be caused by a few things.
First of all is to make sure your husband does not have gastritis or peptic ulcer disease. I do not see what MRI your husband has done, abdominal or other but MRI is not very sensitive for evaluation of stomach and intestinal mucosa. The test that might better visualize them is endoscopy. Having a stomach endoscopic examination might identify gastritis and ulcer disease.
Something to try meanwhile is Omeprazole 40 mg a day, this will reduce acid and might improve symptoms if any problems with the stomach.
Another cause for your husband's symptoms would be food allergy or intolerance. Milk and gluten intolerance are the most common ones. He might try avoiding them for a few weeks and see if any difference is noticed in his symptoms.
Contipation and bowel problems might cause problems with bloating. Make sure he has regular daily bowel movement and if he doesn't then he will need treatment for it. Adding some fiber in diet is helpful, psillium for example.
Every one 50 years and above should have a colonoscopy in 5-10 years so if your husband has not had a recent one, this might be a good time to have a colonoscopy.
Probiotocs can be tried and might be helpful in some patients. If not helpful in a few weeks then there is no need to go on with them.
Making sure that you avoid alcohol or fried food, fatty food might be a great help also.
Some other stool tests that might be considered would be stools for ova and parasites, stool examination for leucocyte and fat content, etc.
Reduced pancreatic enzymes might be a rare cause so adding some pancreatic enzymes as treatment for a while might help in those cases.
Medications might effect your gastrointestinal system so if you are using meds regularly talk to your doctor. Ibuprofen has the risk of hurting the stomach so if you have had need to use it often it might be a cause.
Some people might get bloated due to irritable bowel syndrome. This we suspect if all tests are normal and patient has gastrointestinal symptoms.
Watching diet and adding fiber in diet are the main treatments for it.
I hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you.
Kind regards
