Posted on Mon, 15 Feb 2016
Question: several months ago, I discovered part of my tooth cap was missing and think I probably swallowed it during my sleep. mow, since then I seem to have developed sort of bowel distress.... a lot of bloating at times especially after a heavy meal, and frequent diarrhea and foul smelling flatulence. Excess straining to eliminate at times and a feeling of being irregular. what do you suggest it is and to do? No blood or sharp pains.

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms do not have to be caused by tooth cap.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all please do not expect that the cap is still in your digestive tract. Most likely you have excreted it long time ago. Only in rare cases, such small pieces can stuck in digestive tract.
Your symptoms are rather caused by some kind of gastrointestinal infection. It can have some connection with the swallowed part, but it can be also just a coincidence.
At your age (over 50) any stool pattern change, or other abdominal symptoms should be checked with possible large intestines tumors.

Here is what you should do:
- start probiotic intake, avoid fatty foods, coffee, chocolate, orange juices
- get scheduled for colonoscopy (even if the symptoms will be gone)
- if the probiotic and diet wont help in few days, visit your doctor, have abdominal x-ray (to make sure there is no tooth cap anymore), abdominal ultrasound, blood work and stool test

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
This is rahter not a cancer. Just make sure performing colonoscopy.

Detailed Answer:
Probiotic is a kind of supplement which contains good intestinal bacteria. You can find this bacteria in some foods as well (in yoghurt for example). Here you have some brand names of probiotics: Acidophilus, Bacid, Flora-Q, Novaflor, RisaQuad, Superdophilus.

Its not a cancer. You just have to rule it out. Most likely it is not. But as the risk of colon cancer rises over the age of 50, colonoscopy is advisable. In case of colon cancer, blood in stool is hidden(occult).
