Brief Answer:
Tooth/gum infection, scaling, RCT, Medication

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query.
As far as the abscess in the mouth is concerned, I have two possibilities.
It can be secondary to gum infection or it can be secondary to tooth infection.
Nothing to be panic, consult a oral physician and get it evaluated. You need to take a radiograph to confirm the diagnosis.
If is secondary to tooth infection, the tooth has to be treated with root canal treatment(RCT).
If it is a gum infection, then you need to get the teeth cleaned(Scaling).
If i am your treating doctor, i would have suggested you to take a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin and metronidazole(if you are not allergic).
These are the possible diagnosis and treatment plan based on your description of the lesion, if you can upload the images of the lesion, i can give you exact diagnosis and treatment plan.
I hope my answer will help you, take care.

everything I have heard is that it can be a serious infection even especially when it pops open the problem is when it popped open the swelling went down I will try to get a good photo of it but it seems the swelling is now closer to the jaw line and my mouth is getting dry faster than normal

Brief Answer:
ludwigs angina, medication, consult a dental surgeon

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feed back, The swelling or the abscess can also cause difficulty in breathing(in case of ludwigs angina) so consult a oral maxillofacial surgeon as early as possible and get it treated.
Mean while you can start with the course of antibiotics. The infection will come down in 3 days.
