Suggest Treatment For Accidental Consumption Of Atorvastatin By A 2 Year Old

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: Yesterday I was watching my 2 year old granddaughter and she had gotten my husbands bottle of Atorvastatin 10 mg tab open and was holding the bottle up to her mouth when I saw her. I jumped, yelled no and ran toward her and I scared her but she opened her mouth and I removed the tablets that she had not already spit out from her mouth. At the time, I felt like I had gotten everything out and was greatful that I saw her in the process. Now tonight I'm sitting her worried that "what if I didn't get them all and she happened to swallow one or two? She has not shown any illness but tonight she is very restless and it is making me wonder and question myself. Maybe I should have taken her to the hospital and gotten her checked out yesterday. What if she did actually swallow one or two, what should I do? What am I looking for now in case she did?

Brief Answer:
observation & investigations

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for using HCM.
I can understand your concern, regarding your granddaughter.

Atorvastatin is that group of drug that helps in reducing cholesterol and in the treatment of dyslipaedemias.

Fastest absorbtion being orally, pharmacological action degradation & elimination from the liver.

complications it can cause are severe myalgia, myopathy, nausea, diorrhea, dyspepsia, sometimes alteration in sugar levels, deranged liverfunction tests.
With high over dosages it can cause muscle destruction rhabdomyolysis, leading to acute renal problems

In your case(the child), it is unconfirmed whether the child has really swallowed the tablets, absorption has occured or not?
Although , by now the drug should have been washed out.

In that case , i would suggest you to observe her keenly for any of the above symptoms, all her activities,& go for a liver function tests, creatinine kinase & serum atorvastatin levels (if possible),with the help of your treating doctor, after clinical assesment.

Do not get too much stressed, hoping everything with your granddaughter, will be fine with God`s grace.

Please get back to me if you have any doubt related to this problem.

all the best, take care.
