Suggest Treatment For Acid Reflux And Gastritis
Question: I've suffered from acid reflux and gastritis for many years. My symptoms come and go, but seem to be getting worse over time. I take Dexilant daily, and also Tums and Carafate as needed. Dexilant alone will not stop my symptoms, but that combined with a strict diet does help. However, any deviation from my meds or diet will cause a major setback. I had a scope about five years ago, an abdominal ultrasound two years ago, and an abdominal CT last year, all were normal. I also got tested for H Pylori and a full blood work up recently, which also showed nothing. My GI doctor doesn't seem concerned, but I'm getting tired of this. Should I push for another scope? Also, after getting my gallbladder removed I started taking Digestive Enzymes with Pepsin, could this be contributing to the problem? Finally, since no medicine seems to completely control my symptoms, should I be worried about stomach or esophagus cancer? I'm only 38, but still concerned. Thanks so much for your assistance.
Brief Answer:
Dear XXXX
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using our service. First of all, you have had all the workup needed to evaluate the intestinal track. The possibility of having a stomach or esophageal cancer is low due to negative workup. You might need to do diet modification and control food that produces acid like spicy food, chocolate and coffee. Try to elevate your head over your thorax to decrease reflux.Sometimes ,after gallbladder surgery, you can have "dumping syndrome" which is a delay in the food digestion that can cause reflux and bloating. Digestive enzymes should help this situation. Try to eat small portions and more frequent during the day.
I hope that my advise will be helpful
