Question:
Hello,
I have a little bit reflux from stomach which is causing me a cough for about 3 weeks. This cough comes only when I talk or laugh. It's dry.
This is due to a diet where I'm trying to have more iron products. I have no iron medications.
I would like to take one omeprazol 20 a day but my hb is a little lower than normal 8.4 and minimum is 8.5
I was reading that omeprazol effects iron intake..
Can you advise how to solve this problem?
Brief Answer:
due to reduced stomach acid
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Omeprazole can affect the absorption of oral iron replacement but because this type of iron is different from dietary iron, it does not effect the absorption of dietary iron in foods. This means that though your levels would not decrease because you are taking your normal diet iron, it would not improve because your supplemental iron would not be absorbed.
Omeprazole can also potentially affect vitamin b12 absorption. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anemia if the levels are significantly reduced, it causes a different type of anemia however than iron deficiency anemia.
Omeprazole affects vitamin B12 levels by changing the environment in the stomach and so preventing the release of b12 from the protein to which it is attached.
You can try using the supplement 30 minutes to 1 hour before meals to see if this decreases the stomach irritation. In addition the use of vitamin C would help with absorption.
At present there is no effective treatment to help with the interaction between the omeprazole and the iron.
It is the same for reflux meds
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Just to know if I understood well..
So the intake of food iron is not affected by omeprazol?
And you advise to take the omeprazol an hour before the meal.. And during the meal to take vitamin c to support the intake the iron which is in food.
Correct?
My B12 is alright ..
I just want to use the omeprazol for a week not more
Brief Answer:
if only using for short time should be ok
Detailed Answer:
HI
It would be difficult to explain but supplemental iron comes as nonheme iron which needs low acid content to change into a different format. Unless it is converted to this state it cannot be absorbed.
You can increase the use of iron containing foods (green leafy vegetables, dried fruit, some beans).
Take the iron supplements 30 mins to 1 hour before your meal to reduce the chance the supplement would irritate your stomach. Use the vitamin c at the same time.
If you are only using the omeprazole for a short time, it should not have any significant effect.
Please feel free to ask anything else
Brief Answer:
no would not
Detailed Answer:
Hi
They have done some studies that demonstrated that persons on long term acid reflux therapy are not iron deficient due to the medication.
Persons who are iron deficient due to whatever cause and using supplement however may find it difficult for their iron levels to improve because of the type of iron present in the supplements.
Even though you are not using supplements, you can still use the vitamin c, it would still help.
if anything else unclear, feel free to ask any other questions
Brief Answer:
supplements due to type
Detailed Answer:
HI
No, it affects the formulation found in supplements.
At your level of Hb, you may need supplements at some point if it is difficult to raise the level by diet alone.
