Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.
I have gone through your query and i have also reviewed the image.
I can see whiteheads as well as numerous inflammatory acne lesions i.e papules, nodules and pustules.
I can also see post-acne hyperpigmentation and erythematous acne scars from previously resolved acne.
This is moderately severe to severe grade of acne vulgaris.
Acne is quite common at your age. Moreover acne is a chronic and recurring skin condition.
Treatment of acne varies according to severity of acne.
Oral antibiotics e.g doxycycline, minocycline, lymecycline etc are usually reserved for moderately severe to severe grade of inflammatory acne.
You seem to be an ideal candidate for oral antibiotics.
Duration of treatment with oral antibiotics varies according to severity of acne and response to treatment.
These may be continued for 4-12weeks depending on response.
Besides oral antibiotics, oral retinoids e.g isotretinoin is also a useful option for you. Isotretinoin is the best drug even for the severest grade of acne.
However, isotretinoin is contraindicated in pregnant females and in females who could get pregnant while on treatment with isotretinoin.
Topical antiacne antibacterial gel e.g benzoyl peroxide/ clindamycin can be used for day time application.
Topical retinoids e.g adapalene gel is for night application.
Topical adapalene is antiinflammatory as well as comedolytic and thus also prevents formation of new acne while resolving existing ones.
Therefore topical retinoids are ideal for maintenance once your acne have improved significantly.
Topical retinoids would also help lighten dark spots/ marks resulting from previously healed acne.
You may also opt for a few sessions of chemical peeling from your treating dermatologist.
These are all prescription medications and I suggest that you visit a dermatilogist in your region for the needful.
Regards
