Question: Our 33 year old son has voluntarily gone in for 28 day rehab for drinking. He was drinking 3 bottles of wine a day plus 1/4 bottle hard alcohol. He was hospitalized in Dec for acute pancreatitis. At rehab he had a Comprehensive Metabolic panel. High results were Glucose 102; AST 115; ALT 65; MCH 33.1; Absolute Monocytes 1050. Everything else was in range. What does this indicate? Where do we go from here?

Brief Answer:
Changes of metabolic panel due to alcohol abuse explained below...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the health situation your son is going through.

Before running into final conclusions, I need to have the full blood report as I want to evaluate the changes and compare the results.

Next, as he was a heavy drinker before, the chronic use of alcohol is associated with inflammation of the liver (explained with high AST and ALT). The presence of high monocytes is due to damages of the cells from the alcohol including the pancreatic cells.

Now, as he is stopping drinking alcohol, the metabolic panel will get improved by passing of time although it might require a few more time.

Looking forward to have the full test report in.
