Question : Recent blood tests reveal that I am anemic, with adequate iron stores, have enlarged red blood cells, and have chronic fatigue. Any diagnosis? I am a 74 yr old male.
Brief Answer:
mostly megaloblastic anemia
Detailed Answer:
Anaemia with enlarged RBC with normal iron stores is megaloblastic anaemia due to vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. Get these levels tested to confirm the diagnosis. If levels are low further tests as per clinical condition would be requested. Deficiency can be due to poor intake or poor absorption. Poor intake is seen in strict vegetarians. Malabsorption is also common. Hence instead of tablets, B12 injections need to be taken. Discuss all about this your treating doctor.
