Suggest Treatment For Anemia In An Infant

Question: My grandson who is 18 months old is anemic. Blood tested at 10.5. His mom is sketchy with information from doctor but has told me that he was to take some type of liquid iron, then he got hives and she switched to a multivitamin which has high Iron. I'm concerned with the anemia and whether or not it could be something more concerning as they live in a very old home which is in stages of being remodeled. My concern is lead in old woodwork, wall paint, etc. My granddaughter is very independent and does not appreciate my questions, but I am concerned with the 18 month old. He walked very late due to a 'weak' leg. Thank you.
Brief Answer:
don't be so concerned.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the query. I have read your query.
Hives may have different reasons to appear.
Anemia is not so severe, so you need not to worry.
Also with remodeling of home like wall paint and all other things chances of any toxicity of lead is very low. Anyways it can be easily tested with a blood test.
Iron supplementation should be given in the dose of 3 to 5 mg/kg of elemental iron. Preparation can be given according to your choice or which suits your child.
Foods rich in iron such as green leafy vegetable, beet and dates should be encouraged.
Hope I helped you.

is the liquid iron appropriate for an 18 month old child? Are there not capsules or chewables for a toddler to get what he/she needs? My husband is borderline anemic and he gets mothly vitamin B shots, but perhaps that is a different issue. Thank you for the discussion.
Brief Answer:
liquid iron is best for child.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
Liquid iron is safe and better option in children because there is risk of chocking or gagging with tablets or capsules. And children find it difficult to swallow.
I'm not sure whether chewable tablets are available in your country or not.
Please you can check it at your pharmacist.
