Suggest Treatment For Ankle Sprain

Question: Hello, I sprained my ankle on 12/23 when I encountered an uneven pavement. Did not visit dr., as I have sprained and fractured in the past. Ive been icing 2 to 3 x daily. Should I still consider an air stirrup or brace? Are they OTC?

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Go for X-ray scan first.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query and understand the problem of ankle pain.

If you have swelling or edema and pain over the ankle joint then you may use air stirup or ankle brace which is available over the counter.

But it would be better to go for at least X-ray scan first to rule out chances of even a minor fracture at the joint.

Meanwhile, continue ice application to reduce swelling and take tablet aleve (naproxen) as a OTC pain killer.

Further,I would advice you to see some local doctor or ortho-surgeon who will examine the ankle joint with X-ray interpretation to come at a particular diagnosis.
