Suggest Treatment For Anorectal Abscess

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Oct 2015
Question: I think I have an anorectal abscess. Is it possible to have an anorectal abscess with the drainage coming out of the anus as I do not think it is a fistula because it is coming out the anus. It is painful at times and I can drain it by exerting pressure on it or stretching the area. What treatments can be taken? I would like any surgery to be of the last resort.

Brief Answer:
Clinical evaluation, examination and investigations

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history so well put-in by you.Yes, it is possible that the ano-rectal abscess can drain out of anus. This is more of sinus as it does not connect another skin/mucus membrane. (Fistula connects both).

The suggested treatment plan:
First of all you have to consult a General Surgeon for clinical evaluation and examination by per-rectal examination and proctoscopy, preferably a colonoscopy as a part of a protocol.
Sinogram will decide the extent,depth.
Most of such abscesses do need a proper surgical treatment depending upon the size, site, extent and duration.
A prior course of an antibiotic, metronidazole may help for small such lesions.
But it is ultimately the decision taken by your surgeon that decides the course of action.

I hope this answer helps you in early diagnosis and treatment.
