default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jun 2014
Question: i am experiencing something like night terrors, but it would more apptly be described as night anxiety,
I wake up in a state of almost in a panic attack, not quite in the attack yet, but my mind could easily get me there if my thoughts go in that direction. I take Xanax, which helps me get to sleep and recover from such an episode, but it does nothing to prevent the episode, my sleep is really suffering, thus my day is suffereing, thus, my life is suffering. EVen if I've taken Xanax an hour before the event, I may need to take an additional one to fully recover from it and get back to resting.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.

I think, you have anxiety disorder, may be panic disorder. In that case, you need both antidepressant as well as benzodiazepine. If you have allergy from zoloft (sertraline), then chances of cross reaction with other SSRIs is possible. In that case, you can try either TCAs or relaxation exercise to control the anxiety. TCAs have anti-histaminic effect. It helps in decreasing allergic reaction. In relaxation exercise, you can try JPMR or deep breathing exercise. Rest, you can discuss with your psychiatrist.

In case, you need further help, you can ask.
