Question: A month ago I stated having panic attacks. The doctor gave me Prozac which made them 10 times worse I couldn't even drive or leave my home. The medications were switched to BuSpar and Ativan which have seem to work well I take 15 mgs of buspar twice a day and adivant as needed. I was doing very well with no driving issues at all. On Friday I was diagnosed with a bladder infection and put on Septra twice a day. Saturday I had a new severe panic attack and it is now Monday and I'm still feeling the effects of that panic attack what is the chance that Septra was the cause of the increased panic.

Brief Answer:
likely chances that septra is the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

There are case reports suggesting anxiety symptoms with septra. It can occur in patients without having any anxiety problem. In patients with anxiety problem chances of panic attacks lilkey more.

In your case you were stable on buspar and ativan for your anxiety disorder. These are good drugs and sudden increase in problem can not be possible without some stressful factor or stopping the medicines.

It is clear that you had more panic attakcs after starting spectra. It means spectra is the culprit, provided you have not stopped buspar and ativan.

There is no significant intercation between spectra and buspar- ativan. So that reason is also ruled out for worsening of your problem.

Hope I have answered your query,
I will be happy to help further.

I understood you to say that Septra was the likely cause. I didn't really understand your last sentence regarding no known interaction. Would this be a form of allergic reaction to the septra? I will call my Dr tomorrow.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
it is not allergic reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for follow up.

In last sentence I wanted to explain following thing.

When 2 or more drugs taken together, there will be interaction between them inside body in terms of absorption and metabolism of drugs. These interaction can increase or decrease the concentration of one drug by the other. For example if 'X' drug is given with 'Y' drug, X can decrease the concentration of Y and Y may become ineffective though it can be effective if given alone without X.

Septra does not effect buspirone and ativan concentration in the body and septra is not responsible for panic attack by reducing concentration and effects of buspirone and ativan.
And it is not allergic reaction of septra. Allergic reaction symptoms are totally different from anxiety symptoms.

You can complete the course of septra if you can tolerate panic symptoms, or your doctor may replace the medicine with some another antibiotic.

Thanks,
