Suggest Treatment For Atrophic Vaginitis
Question: Thank you. I will give you a little insight on what I am dealing with. I have always been in exceptional health. Over the last 3 years I put on 50 lbs due to depression. I am 5'7". My last period was 5 years ago this October. I am 60 years old. Last Oct. I went thru a VERY stressful time, I began to bleed. Very, very little, but it lasted about 5 days. Then nothing till 2 weeks ago, a little pink on the toilet paper after I urinated. I have always been constipated, and occasionally over several years, a little blood from the vagina when I strained. At the time of the bleeding last Oct, I saw my drs. PA. Ovaries, uterus, showed no abnormalities upon palpation. They suggested a transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound. I just had that done today, as I have no health insurance and pay out of pocket, took me awhile to get the money up to have this done. At the time of the exam, she saw a little blood at the end of the cervix. My vagina was also atrophied. Sex with my husband recently made me sore. Occasionally, I have a dull ache deep in my vagina. I am very scared I could have the BIG C. The results will be in on Monday. From what I have told you and the abdominal photo, do you believe I could be dealing with a cancerous issue? Thank you,XXXX
Brief Answer:
Can be atrophic vaginitis. Not likely to be cancer
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
I have seen the photo attached. Nothing can be made out from the photo. A radiologist's report is necessary to find out the problem. From the history provided the bleeding could be due to atrophic vaginitis or chronic cervicitis. A PAP smear is needed to find out any cervical pathology. mild intermittent bleeding is not likely to be due to cancer. Please do not worry and wait for the results.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Pap was done and it came back fine. I will let you know what their findings are. If it is atrophic vaginitis, what can be done for it? If the endometrium is thickened, could this cause the intermittent bleeding? If so, can anything be done for that? Thank you
Brief Answer:
Can be treated with medicines.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Atrophic vaginitis can be treated with estrogen creams used locally. Thickened endometrium needs a biopsy to rule out any malignancy. The bleeding can also be due to a bleeding/ blood disorder use of medicines like aspirin or a local trauma due to vigorous sex.

Hello. I received my results this morning. They said the ultrasound was unremarkable, everything look good. The only problem is my uterine lining is thickened (borderline). The number they gave me was 5 and then some letters after that. I am 50 lbs overweight. I have read obesity can cause more estrogen which in turn can cause a thickened uterine lining. If I drop this extra weight, would that possibly help the lining to go down? Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Yes. It will help.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
It is good that the report has come normal. The endometrial lining is influenced by weight. Shedding few extra kilos will help in bringing your endometrium back to normal. This will help in preventing this irregular bleeding episodes also.
