Suggest Treatment For Atrophy Of Both The Supra And Infraspinatus Muscles

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Jun 2017
Question: I had a rotator cuff repair about 6 months ago, which was unsuccessful; I now have significant atrophy of both the supra and infraspinatus muscles. I've heard that there has been research into the use of stem cells to repair the damage and essentially "regrow tendon tissue that can be used to reattach the tendon to the bone -- and that procedure has begun to be performed in a few cases in Europe. Can you comment on this? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Stem cells and tendon repair/ transplant

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Tendons are hard to heal unless there is adequate regenerative capacity. According to NCBI, there have been over 70 animal studies on stem cells being used for tendon regeneration. All these studies yielded positive results. Only five clinical trials on human beings were conducted. The results in these trials were also promising. The tendon repair through stem cells injected via ultrasound guidance also included the rotator cuff tendons. There were some complications with one notable report of bone growth within the transplanted tendon. So , while it is theoretically , a much more viable option, the clinical experience yet is limited.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
