Posted on Mon, 8 Sep 2014
Question: I hope you can help me. I have been suffering with body odor that smells like a skunk. This has been going on for several years. I am 55 years old. I have seen my gynecologist. I am going throught menopause, my gyn seems to think its hormonal. She prescribed Vagifem tablets, I use them twice a week and estrace which I also use twice a week. I also use an over the counter feminine gel cream every three days by Monistat. This problem is embarassing and depressing. I don't want to go on vacation or be in a car for long periods of time because I don't know when my body will give off this odor. I know this problem is not in my head because I do hear people say I smell a skunk and I have heard people talking about me. Please help, this problem is ruining my life. Thank you so much.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Is the odor from your whole body or only from your genitals ?

Do you have any associated white discharge per vagina?

Do you sweat excessively or have excessive body hair ?

Are you on any medications than those written by you ?

Do you have any skin changes ?

Please do answer these as it will help me to understand your problem better .

HI Dr. Biswas - The odor is coming from the vaginal area. My answer is no to all of the questions you asked. The other two medications I am taking are: Diovan 320MG for blood pressure and lipitor 10mg for cholesterol. Thank you.

Dear Mitchellstee ,

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX ,

If it is from the vagina then you have to get a pap smear and a vaginal swab culture as it can be a pelvic infection or sometimes even cancer cervix.

I am not saying that it is any of the above but there is a possibility.

Do follow up with the report.

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX - I have had a pap smear and a vaginal swab culture. Nothing showed up. My gyn said she doesn't smell anything, she probably doesn't because the odor isn't constant. Thanks for your help.

Detailed Answer:
Dear      XXXXXXX ,

Sorry for the delay.

Good that nothing showed up on the investigations. It means it is nothing serious.

Do not worry. Apply some vaginal perfume solution ( plenty in the market ).
