Suggest Treatment For Bad Odor In The Vaginal Area

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Nov 2014
Question: Hi...I have a very bad odor in my vaginal area....at first I thought it was because I changed vitamins and that was what was causing the odor. I stopped taking the vitamins and the smell is still there. I take a shower in the morning and by noon the same day the smell is back. I am not sexually active. This odor is like I have an infection...not fishy just smelly. no discharge. pain and pressure in the bottom of my stomach at times and lower back pain. My doctor took a ua sample and it came back negative....all my labs are good. Can you perhaps put me on the right path. I had a partial hyst on 04...they left my ovaries. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
May be bacterial vaginosis

Detailed Answer:
The odor has nothing to do with the vitamins. At the age of 53, it is most likely that you are in menopause. This means that your ovaries are out of eggs and you are producing extremely little estrogen. When this occurs, you are prone to vaginal infections or alterations of the vaginal bacteria. You already know that this is not related to a bladder infection, so the odor is most likely coming from the vagina. Bacteria that produce an odor are called 'anaerobes' and the most common infection related to them is called Bacterial Vaginosis, or BV. You do not necessarily have to have a discharge. The treatment includes:

1. Metrogel twice daily for 5 days - you need a prescription
2. Consider daily florajen capsules - available from your pharmacist
3. If this is a recurrent problem, ask your OB/GYN about vaginal estrogen

I hope that this helps!
