Question: I had an ablasion surgery done about 5yrs ago, I was 41 at the time. Surgery was great. haven't had a period since then.....not a drop. But for the past month I've noticed a gross vaginal odor, it is a kinda sweet/iron smell. I've douched a few times to try to get rid of it and it comes right back. Can u please help me......what's happening?? I'm not doing anything different in my life, so what has changed?

Brief Answer:
BV LIKELY

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Actually , douching might be worsening it.
You are 46, this is very much a peri menopausal age.
Local hormones might be going down, leading to subtle changes in the vaginal pH, making it more prone to infections, breakage and foul smell.
This could be bacterial vaginosis, often worsened by douching which further messes up the vaginal pH.
New sexual partners might trigger it, as can stress, trauma, anxiety etc.
You need to consult a gynecologist and go for an internal exam and a vaginal swab to confirm the diagnosis.
Metronidazole therapy orally and local clindamycin gel help , but it is not wise to start that without seeing a doctor first.
Also, please do not douche.
Do not use any soaps, gels, cleansers etc there.
Just clean with lukewarm water and XXXXXXX dry gently.
Have protected sex till the issue is resolved.
All the best

Brief Answer:
CAN LAST LONG, IF UNTREATED

Detailed Answer:
Untreated bacterial vaginosis might get really bad, and linger for months, if not longer.
It is really better to have it looked at.
Your primary care provider might help by taking a swab for BV.
Take care.
