Question: My husband will be starting the BCG treatment for bladder cancer. I understand that this is live bacteria. I babysit with 2 preschool children full time. Are there any risk to these 2 children. I understand when he urinates you should treat the urine with clorox. How often or how long is this done? Thank you for your concern. YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
No issues, slight measures will prevent transmission

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concerns regarding BCG and its transmission. To make it impossible to transmit, your husband should reduce intake of fluids for 4 hours before the procedure so that he can hold it for longer inside bladder . And at least 2 to 4 hours after procedure, avoid triggers like caffeine or alcohol to prevent diuresis . All this effort is to make sure first void is 6 hours after procedure, and that too be voided in sitting position in urinal so that there is no splashing out, followed by adequate disinfectant use like 2 cups of household bleach or clorox and let it stand for 15 to 20 minutes before draining and flushing it out. Thorough washing of genitals will make sure of no transmission. For extra precaution, your husband's urinal should be separated for the kids, although not needed but if it can help with the peace of mind no harm.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself, your husband's and your children and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
