Suggest Treatment For Blocked Ears Causing Difficulty In Swallowing Food

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Nov 2016
Question: Good Evening,
My left ear has been blocked for @ 2 weeks. This affects my left eye and and swallowing is difficult on the left side as well. I have had a course of amoxicillin Sandaz, allergy tablets, nasal sprays(Avamys). I have tried to pop my ears using the various techniques, it will pop a little but the air just fills back into the ear. I have tried ear candling, drops of 3% peroxide, vinegar and pure alcohol equal amounts to treat (fungas) as the amoxicillin didn't work. I have had this reoccurring on and off now for around three years. I feel like it is allergies of some kind. I have been to various doctors and they say that my ear and throat are fine. This is affecting me big time as I know it is not normal. It is making me very tired and unable to function. But I can't seem to get any answers.

Brief Answer:
sounds like allergies

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
I agree with you that it sounds like allergies.
Fexofenadine is a good anti-histamine so I suggest that you continue taking that.
It may be a good idea also to add a leukotriene inhibitor like Singulair. This is a prescription and is used in asthma but also in allergies.
In addition using nasal saline 6-8 times a day can help to flush out allergens.
The avamys is also good to continue, but it takes several weeks to kick in and start working so don't give up on it if you do not have quick results.
You may have developed serous otitis which is fluid behind the drum. If this has happened decongestants (oral not nasal) may be helpful.
Most effusions will resolve over the course of 12 weeks without treatment but this is a long time to be in discomfort.
Tympanostomy tubes may be indicated if this is the case, but I believe the ENT doctors that do this procedure would want you to wait longer before inserting the tubes.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
