Suggest Treatment For Breast Fibroid
Iam a female aged 25 years. I have a breast fibroid in my left breast measuring 2.5x1.5x1.6 cm. I consulted a Gynaecologist and she recommended a surgery. As I am not very sure about it as I have read articles where the fibroid reappears after a surgery, I wanted to know if surgery is the only alternative or if it can be treated with Medicine/exercises or natural remedies.
Surgery is the only answer.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Good Morning.
You have asked a very good question as the lump in the breast has many implications.
The decision to remove such a lump or to keep it under observations depends upon many many factors. The important ones are the age of the patient, duration of the lump, symptoms like pain or not, chances of malignancy, aesthetics after removal (may change the shape of the breast) and acceptance by the patient and the husband (if married), cancer-phobia (fear about this being a cancer), location of the lump (if in the lowest part- surgery is more cosmetic) and so on.
I hope you understand what I mean by.
Now taking your case in consideration on individual basis:
You are 25 years old, fibroid (lump) is 2.5 X 1.5 X 1.6 cm in the left breast. This is quite large lump.
I would like to know a few thing that will help me to give you a proper opinion and you can take a reference of the things I noted in the first paragraph.
-Since when is the lump present ?
-Is it painful / any relation to the menstrual cycle meaning the size / pain increase just before menstrual period ?
-What are the investigations done - like mammography / Ultrasonography / FNAC or MRI ?
-Have you been examined by a Surgeon for examination of the breast and axillae?
-Are you married ? (If married - children / breast feeding ?)
-Is the lump seen or hidden means has to be palpated ?
-Any other information you would like to share - your fears / anxiety about being cancer ?
As per the history you have provided:
-Since you have mentioned this as fibroid, it looks you have been investigated.
If this is a fibroadenoma, this can be removed in total, without any recurrence and with least possible disturbance to the shape of the breast with good cosmetic results.
-If this is fibro-adenosis, this is related to the hormonal changes, may be painful, may be spread beyond its boundaries, and becomes a bit difficult to remove in-total. This is so called recurrence.
An this is what you must have overheard or read.
Recurrence is usually the growth of the smaller remnants of such tumors or if it is cancer.
I would advise you the following:
First of all get examined by an expert- like a General Surgeon. This will give the clinical diagnosis, you can discuss the pros and cons of actual procedure and its implications on shape, size, cosmesis, whether surgery is needed or not...
Secondly, get few investigations done, if not already done- ultrasonography and guided FNAC.
With these factors you / we can decided whether surgery is needed or not and whether it will be helpful, whether the cosmetic aspect will be taken care of.
Thirdly, discuss with your family members....
Yes, Surgery is the only alternative. No medicines, exercises or natural remedies help; please do not try anything like this.
I hope this answer helps you in decision taking. Please give me the feedback for me to help you more, and feel free to discuss more if you need to or if you feel there is a gap-of-communication.
