Suggest Treatment For Bump On My Head

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: Hello, I just came from seeing a dermatologist about a bump on my head almost a
quarter in size. I thought it was a cyst, but when a dermatologist looked at it he said it doesn't feel like a cyst. It felt like liquid was in side. He took a needle to draw out what was inside and a lot of pus and later blood came out. He said the skin is infected, but he wasn't sure what it is and the spot of the bump had a slight dent after most of the pus was came out that worried him a little. How told me to come back and see him after a little while if things don't get better because he might have to do an incision to better treated it which I told him I really want to avoid. After coming home and googling what I learned about my problem, folliculitis keeps popping up. If it is folliculitis, what should I do to treat the problem. Also, I notice an hour ago that the bump that was flatten on my head came back about half it's original size.

Brief Answer:
Might need a course of oral antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
You seem to have developed an infection of the hair follicle called folliculitis.
keep the affected area clean and dry . Apply a topical antibiotic cream like neosporin or mupirocin over the affected area twice daily . You might a course of oral antibiotics if the lesion tends to persist or increase.
In most cases with folliculitis, incision is not required .These tend to heal with proper local care and antibiotics.
So you need not worry, just apply the medicine and see a nearby doctor if the condition still tends to persist.
Take some oral painkillers like ibuprofen or paracetamol to reduce the inflammation and pain .

The folliculitis that you said I have is about the size of a quarter in width and about a quarter of an inch in height on my head. It is filled with pus that required a syringe needle to drain most of the pus out by a doctor. The pus has come back in one day after being drained. Will the antibiotic you recommend reduce and remove the pus or do I have to get something else? Also, there is no hair on the bump. If the bump goes away, will hair at the location come back?

Brief Answer:
Need for re drainage

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

From the description you have provided,it looks like you might need to get the lesion drained once again by a sterile needle by a doctor . After draining ,you might discuss the need for an antibiotic course with your treating doctor .
In most cases ,normal hair growth restores after healing of the lesion ,only in few cases a patch of complete hair loss can develop ,but right now it's too early to predict what the further course would be.

Thanks for your advice doctor. I have to admit, I'm not sure I saw the right doctor. The location where I went had different types of doctors, so I told the front desk people that I want to see a dermatologist which I know works there. The doctor they assigned me to told me he usually does surgeries. After draining the lesion, I couldn't believe how quick the pus came back. Because the doctor didn't give me any antibiotic to use after draining the pus, I didn't want to go back in two weeks showing no improvement. So I started looking over the internet for anything I could find to help my situation. I ended up finding 3 natural cures for my folliculitis (5% distilled white vinegar, Apple Cider Vinegar & Turmeric) and after 3 days of using those items, the lesion so far has reduced by about 40%. I think I will continue to use them to see the final results. Thanks again for you help.

Hi again

You can surely continue with the treatment that is providing you relief ,but at the same time ,keep the affected area clean and dry . Apply a topical antibiotic cream like neosporin or mupirocin over the affected area twice daily after cleaning the lesion with warm saline water.
