Question: My wife has a burning and numbness in her hands. She just stopped smoking but has smoked for many years. She thinks this might be a Fibro Mialga issue. I want to help her but I don't know what to do other than take her to a Doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that in this situation, it is important to exclude other causes like a polineuropathy, an electrolytes imbalance, bilateral carpal tunnel (pinched nerves) which could lead to this symptomatology.

Fibromyalgia can not be excluded but it is less probable because these symptoms are not characteristic of this disorder.

Anxiety could also mimic this clinical scenario.

I recommend consulting with her attending physician for a careful physical examination and some blood lab tests ( complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels, blood electrolytes, fasting glucose, vitamin B12 plasma levels, PCR, sedimentation rate).

A nerve conduction test would help to rule in\out possible polineuropathy or pinched nerve.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!

Greetings!
