Suggest Treatment For Cancerous Mass In The Left Lobe Of Thyroid
Total thyroidectomy is a recommended treatment if cancer mass is large
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. It is important to read through your imaging reports to know the size of the cancerous mass in the left lobe of thyroid.
2. Very often the cancer might spread by micro invasion. This is a process by which the cancer cells might proliferate to adjacent normal thyroid tissue without any obvious features of infiltration to the eye.
3. This micro invasion might cause a recurrence of cancer or more aggressive form of cancer if only part of the thyroid is removed when the patient has a large cancer mass.
4. For better treatment outcome, doctors plan total thyroidectomy in cases of thyroid cancer which is large and confirmed in one lobe. Many patients are on daily thyroid hormone replacement and lead a normal life.
5. Your cancer might still be in early stage and therefore no lymph nodes are enlarged. If left untreated then there might be lymph node involvement in few weeks to months. Once lymph node involvement is visualized then the staging in more and the disease is advanced. Treatment of advanced stage disease is difficult. Having a cancer requires you to follow up with your doctor regularly.
Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Dr.Vivek
the size of my left thyroid lesion is 7.0 x 4.0 x 6.0 cm and a small right thyroid nodule as well that is 3.7 x 1.8 x 1.1 cm.
It sounds like I have to have entire thyroid removed, do you agree?
(lymph nodes are normal and left lymph node is 1.8 x .6 x .6 cm)
Thank you so much.
