Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome back to HealthcareMagic,
I've gone through your query and understand your concern,

Yes, as you've rightly pointed out, the first and foremost measure is to quit smoking completely...

The only way to quit smoking is to stop it completely, gradual tapering isn't a helpful measure unfortunately as it can only trigger the craving even more from time to time..

Be motivated at first, surround yourself with positive people and non-smokers, you can do it....

Stay away from any negative influences... you can start nicotine chewing gums(i.e. Nicorette) and sugar candies to cut down on the smoking, whenever feel like craving, have a chewing gum instead...

Don't stay isolated, as loneliness only attracts more cravings, so be surrounded by people(positive people/group), it'll not only take the mind off but also help in the long run too..

As for the chest tightness/, excessive breathing efforts are concerned, first of all, you need to get a Chest X-ray(PA-view) done and if non-conclusive then may need to get a CT-scan chest done to look into it further...

You need to visit a Pulmonologist/Chest-physician in the first place without any further delay for a prompt clinical examination and a few more investigations (eg. Spirometry etc.) and proceed accordingly...

Let me know how you stay in the due course...
